Course overview
Levantine Arabic is the dialect of Arabic spoken in the Levant region of the Middle East (Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, and Jordan).
This Levantine Pre-Intermediate course is for students who have completed the full Elementary course at SOAS or an equivalent number of hours of formal Arabic language study (approximately 120 hours). If neither of these apply to you but you think this may be your level, an online assessment can be conducted, please book an assessment.
Learners will be able to converse with confidence, give presentations and engage actively in discussions about the topics they have covered. They will be able to conduct interviews and report on these using the vocabulary and grammar they have learned, read longer and more complex texts in different genres and speak with some fluency about a variety of articles and topics of interest to them. This course is delivered by the Language Centre
Method
The course is taught in Arabic with support in English and includes a healthy exposure to Arabic grammar and vocabulary which will be need to develop the skills of comprehension in listening and reading, and the skills of expression in speaking and writing. This course places a greater focus on speaking skills for communicative purposes.
This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. The lessons are supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the course.

Entry requirements and progression route
This course is aimed at students who have completed the full Levantine Elementary Course (Arabic Levantine Elementary 1, 2, and 3) or equivalent (approximately 120 hours of formal study). After completing Levantine Pre-Intermediate 1, students progress onto Levantine Pre-Intermediate 2, and then Levantine Pre-Intermediate 3. After this, students can begin the Levantine Intermediate level.

Structure
Arabic Levantine Pre-Intermediate 1
In this course you will:
- talk about daily routine using present tense
- use adverbs of frequency to describe habitual activities
- Describe and ask about ongoing activities
- Talk about Hobbies and pastimes
- Talk about likes and dislikes using negation
- discuss relationships with friends and colleagues
- use quantifiers to describe belongings
- use present tense correctly including weak verbs
- learn doubled verbs structure
- use adverbs to express time
- use the active participle to express abilities
- use verbal nouns to talk about hobbies
Arabic Levantine Pre-Intermediate 2
In this course you will:
- converse about organising activities
- talk about duties and commitments
- talk about future plans
- express opinions and negotiate
- describe feelings, mood and temper
- talk about housework and repairs
- learn special occasions greetings
- conjugate Future tense correctly
- correlate verb types with their meanings
- learn about government and international organisations
- practise multiple use of some verbs
- learn about Festivals in Syria
Arabic Levantine Pre-Intermediate 3
In this course you will:
- express Intentions and ask for clarification
- give instructions and orders.
- converse about household design and arrangement
- arrange for a trip with colleagues
- express interest, sympathy and indifference.
- ask for help and guidance
- learn how to inquire about paid housework services
- conjugate direct, indirect and negative Imperative.
- use the relative clauses correctly
- use attached pronouns referring to nouns correctly
- converse about furniture items and tools
- learn how to communicate with workers
The above is an indication of content that may be covered over the duration of the course but it could vary depending on the level and progress of students in the class.
