Course overview

Course aim

The course aims to enable students to read the Qur’anic script efficiently, to familiarise themselves with the basic structures of Classical Arabic and to help them learn high frequency words and comprehend some short surahs (chapters of the Qur’an). Emphasis is placed on reading and handwriting. No prior knowledge of alphabets is needed. Students who chose to study this course are not aiming to use the language for communication, but to acquire literacy skills and comprehend the language of the holy Qur’an. This course is delivered by the Language Centre

Method

The course is taught in English with the use of high frequency Qur'anic expressions. The teaching will focus on linguistic aspects including essential Tajweed rules and the correct pronunciation of letters. Students will also learn to discriminate between Qur’anic and Modern Standard Arabic script and spell words correctly. They will also learn essential grammatical rules and attempt to translate phrases and simple sentences. They will be working in groups and individually to achieve the best outcomes intended.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.
