Basic Literacy in Arabic Semi-intensive is designed to enable learners to develop basic literacy skills for reading and writing the Arabic script.

Duration: 1 week, 10 hours, Monday 16th July - Friday 20th July 2018

Mode of attendance: 18:00-20:00, five weekday evenings, Monday to Friday

Description

This is a course aimed at developing basic skills for reading and writing the Arabic script. This can be useful for those who can speak already but want to continue learning Arabic beyond simply speaking and for heritage learners and new Muslims who would like to learn the basics with the eventual aim of reading the holy Quran.

Students will learn Arabic letters, their shapes and sounds and will be able to read short, simple texts by the end of the course. They will be also learning how to write and will be exposed to the different writing fonts/styles including the Usmani (Quranic script).

In class, students are encouraged to interact with each other in pairs or in small groups. Outside of the class, participants are asked to put in sufficient effort between sessions to undertake the necessary consolidation of in-class learning so that progress targets can be achieved. This means about 2 hours of guided self-study each day.

Method

The course is taught in English and Arabic and materials will be provided by the teacher. No previous knowledge of Arabic script is needed.

Class size is limited to fifteen to allow for intensive interactive practice and individual support.

Materials

All materials will be provided by the teacher.

Terms and Conditions

Before applying, please be sure that you have read the SOAS Language Centre Terms and Conditions.

How to Apply

Since beginner courses presuppose no knowledge of the language, there are no assessments offered for this course. To apply, simply click on the relevant product in the Online Store (If a discount applies, please contact the relevant Administrator).

Important Note

Please note that, if you wish to progress smoothly to the next level of study, you should expect to devote enough time out of class to self-study and revision. Although the summer courses are designed to ensure that you make progress regardless of how much self-study you do, we strongly recommend that you put sufficient private study time aside to support the in-class tuition you receive. Please be aware that the pace of the summer courses is fast-moving. You are strongly advised not to over-commit yourself for the duration of a course that contains the word ‘intensive’ in its description. For those who wish to study at a more leisurely pace (one contact session of 2 hours a week), our term-time courses are ideally suited.

Continuing Your Study

There are several options after completion of the course: those with good speaking skills will be able to join our ‘Native Speakers’ course in the Autumn Term starting in October; those interested in studying Quranic Arabic can also join this specific course in October; those who wish to go on with Modern Standard Arabic will be placed in the correct course for their level considering both their speaking and their writing skills.
