Mode of Attendance: Part-time

The course is designed to develop participants’ abilities to read Chinese newspapers and similar authentic materials from other media. The course consists of three terms (each term consists of 12 weeks) during which it is hoped that participants will become familiar with the structure and formats of Chinese news media. The course also aims to further the understanding of different aspects of life in Chinese societies both past and present, through various chosen topics.

The course uses a range of materials, from An Introduction to Chinese Newspapers Reading in Term 1 to SOAS prepared materials in Term 2 and 3, supplemented by additional materials from a wide range of sources. Chinese will be the language of instruction in class. The course will be discussion based, with regular topical seminars. In addition to written texts, authentic audio and visual materials will also feature in the course in each of the three terms. Preparation for the class is highly recommended, and voluntary homework is set each week.

Class size is normally limited to fifteen to allow intensive interactive practice with individual feedback and advice on progress.
