Course overview

The course aims to teach Japanese to learners who have completed the beginners levels of spoken Japanese with the knowledge of approximately 150 kanji, and to further develop communicative skills in a wide range of contexts.

Students completing this course are able to progress to Japanese Intermediate, or B1 level in Common European Framework. For more details please see language proficiency levels CEFR). This course is delivered by the Language Centre

Method

The course is taught in English and Japanese and includes coverage of the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing and a good balance between understanding the systems of Japanese grammar and vocabulary, developing the skills of comprehending and producing Japanese in speech and writing, guided practice in language usage and use and authentic communicative activities.

This will be achieved through 20 hours of blended learning: this is composed of 15 hours of online structured lessons with the teacher. This is supplemented by a minimum of 5 hours of guided independent learning supported by complementary material. The course objective will be achieved within the 10-week course.

Entry requirements and progression route

To be able to join Japanese Pre-Intermediate 1 you should have completed a Japanese Elementary course at SOAS Language Centre or have an equivalent knowledge of guided learning hours (approx. 120 hours). The progression route from Japanese Pre-Intermediate 1 is to Japanese Pre-Intermediate 2; from Pre-Intermediate 2 to Japanese Pre-Intermediate 3. Upon successful completion of Japanese Pre-Intermediate 3 you will be able to progress to the Intermediate level course in Japanese.

Structure

Japanese Pre-Intermediate 1

In this course you will:

  • explain delicate matters and ask for advice/suggestions
  • make and respond to polite requests
  • confirm information
  • provide excuses
  • describe what one can do or one is allowed to do
  • describe habitual activities
  • give reasons/excuses
  • express regrets/sense of relief
  • describe states and appearances
  • make requests to get things done
  • read and write 205 kanji

Japanese Pre-Intermediate 2

In this course you will:

  • talk about the future
  • talk about New Year’s resolutions
  • give advice
  • express conjecture
  • give commands
  • read signposts that are ubiquitous
  • describe lost items to retrieve them
  • provide instruction with gestures
  • read and write 255 kanji

Japanese Pre-Intermediate 3

In this course you will:

  • explain how to carry out tasks
  • describe dreams and hopes
  • convey messages
  • give recommendations on topics raised
  • talk about one’s efforts for achieving goals
  • express emotions caused by things done to oneself by others
  • describe history of events
  • talk about one’s likes, dislikes, strengths and weaknesses
  • read and write 290 Kanji
