SOAS Language Centre Summer Programme

July - August 2017

This summer, the SOAS Language Centre is offering tuition in a large number of languages, many of which are not widely available elsewhere. Courses are available either as 1-week courses, which involve 10 hours of tuition (Introduction and Essential), or as 2-week courses with 20 hours of tuition (Beginners). To make good progress, students are expected to do some self study as advised by their teacher.

Introduction courses (1-week, semi-intensive) are intended as self-contained courses, introducing the learner to the pronunciation of the language and teaching basic language for everyday interaction with speakers of the language. They are also ideal as an introduction to further study, either on another Summer programme or on the programme of 10 week courses which we offer during the academic year.

Essential courses (1 week, semi-intensive) are designed as a customised version of our popular Beginners 1 courses and consist of two stages - Essential 1 and Essential 2. Depending on your learning goals and your current level in the language, you can choose one of the options below:

- you can attend Essential 1 only to give you a 'first taste' of the language and let you decide if you would like to study it further

- if you are a complete beginner and wish to cover the material of a Beginners 1 course at a fast-paced and intensive course, you can attend both Essential 1 and Essential 2.

- if you are not a complete beginner and just need some revision before joining a Beginners 2 course, you can enrol directly on Essential 2

Beginners courses (2-weeks, semi-intensive) go further into language acquisition, teaching the learner the four keys skills of the target language (listening, speaking, reading and writing). These courses allow learners to progress by taking additional courses through the Language Centre. Beginners 1 leads to Beginners 2 and then to Beginners 3. Please see individual language pages for course contents.

Contact Us

If your target language is not on offer in this Summer Programme, please email us at wish-list@soas.ac.uk saying what language and at which level you would like to learn with us in the future. Please kindly see the list of languages taught at SOAS Language Centre to make sure your target language is on the list.

For any further enquiries concerning the Easter courses, please email or phone the relevant Language Administrator (see Contact Us).

Important Note

Please note that, if you wish to progress smoothly to the next level of study, you should expect to devote enough time out of class to self-study and revision. Although the summer courses are designed to ensure that you make progress regardless of how much self-study you do, we strongly recommend that you put sufficient private study time aside to support the in-class tuition you receive. Please be aware that the pace of the summer courses is fast-moving. You are strongly advised not to over-commit yourself for the duration of a course that contains the word ‘intensive’ in its description. For those who wish to study at a more leisurely pace (one contact session of 2 hours a week), our term-time courses are ideally suited.
