Access to Special Collections

If you already have a SOAS Library card

You are welcome to use Special Collections, SOAS Library if you hold a valid SOAS Library card (Borrowing, Reference or Archives Membership).

Booking an appointment is not required. Please see our webpages for details of our opening hours and how to order material.

If you don’t have a SOAS Library card

You are welcome to apply for a free Archives Membership of SOAS Library. Please present the following at the SOAS Library membership desk:

a) Photographic ID (passport; driving licence; student card; national ID card; freedom pass; or disabled person's registration card)

b) Proof of address: a utility bill, bank statement, or official letter issued within the past 3 months

Archives Membership allows access to Special Collections only (archives, manuscripts, rare books and theses). You may be eligible to apply for a full Reference or Borrowing Membership under alternative access arrangements.

When you visit, you’ll need to sign in the register held at the Supervisor's Desk in the Special Collections Reading Room in order to access the material held there. By doing so, you are agreeing to abide by the Reading Room Regulations.
