Language support and revitalisation, language policy and planning
The department is known for its research and training in language revitalisation, policy and planning. Staff and students in the Department are engaged in a number of language community-based projects that involve a combination of research and applied activities such as creation of teaching resources, reference materials, language learning aids, and blogs and websites. These activities include The Sylheti Project, the Dieri Aboriginal Corporation Language Revitalisation Project, and work on language revitalisation in Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Cornwall and Wales. Staff also conduct research into language revitalisation, language policy and planning as a field of study: theorisation, aims, methods, outcomes, its relation to documentation, and what it means to ‘save’ a language.
