Linguistic diversity and its theoretical modelling

Staff and students are carrying out theoretical, descriptive and socio-linguistic research on a range of languages:

  • languages belonging to the Austronesian language family, including languages of Taiwan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand
  • a range of spoken and signed languages belonging to the Tibeto-Burman subgroup of the Sino-Tibetan language family, including languages of Nepal, Burma, Thailand and China
  • languages of Africa including Bantu and Atlantic languages
  • Arabic and other Afro-Asiatic languages
  • Uralic, Altaic and Palaeosiberian languages spoken in Russia
  • Japanese, Korean, and Mandarin Chinese
