SOAS University of London

Department of Linguistics, School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics

Staff and students are carrying out theoretical and descriptive research on a range of topics in non-derivational syntactic theories, in particular, Lexical Functional Grammar, Dynamic Syntax and Construction Grammar. The Department hosts regular meetings of the South of England Lexical Functional Grammar group. The department was the original home of the development of Dynamic Syntax, which pays particular attention to language use, the role of context and the time-linear dynamics of language and develops a formal model of human language building on these fundamental qualities. It remains a centre of Dynamic Syntax research and is particularly concerned with the extension of the model in terms of cross-linguistic empirical coverage.
