Czech and Polish Speaking Skills

The project created on-line materials intended to assist post-graduate students in language-based area studies in the development of their speaking and listening skills in Czech and Polish.

The materials include:

  • dialogues set mainly in an academic context;
  • listening tasks for information retrieval;
  • exercises which can be forwarded to the teacher for feedback and, where appropriate, assessment (e.g. pronunciation practice, role-play, answers to questions on texts, note-taking and summarising).

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the project is to enable students who combine research methods training and discipline-based training with intensive language tuition to function effectively during a period of study in the country where the target language is spoken, both on an everyday basis and within the context of their specialist area of study.

The project’s objectives will involve the creation of computer-based materials, focussing on particular aspects of speaking and listening skills and arranged progressively, to be used by students on an independent basis. It is envisaged that some exercises can be completed by students on a collaborative basis, using a common on-line work space.

Products, Outputs & Outcomes

At the end of the project a set of units (seven in each language) for independent study focusing on the development of speaking and listening skills was produced.
