In recent months we have been presented with a growing picture of a ‘refugee crisis’ in Europe. The more than half a million people reaching Europe through irregular means since the beginning of the year, has a) prompted radically different interpretations of the nature and causes of this ‘crisis’ b) divided European policy-makers over how to manage or solve this ‘crisis’, and c) engendered strong grassroots responses to the ‘crisis’ along both inclusionary and exclusionary lines.
In this open forum we will discuss the nature of this ‘crisis’ addressing, from different perspectives, the following questions. Is its characterisation as a ‘refugee crisis’ useful? Is it a European crisis or a crisis of “Europe”? Is the crisis in Europe or elsewhere? Who is made visible or invisible by different framings of the ‘crisis’? And what is at stake when we try to decide who is worthy of protection or allowed to cross the border?
