About this event

We are pleased to invite you to submit papers to the Doctoral Research Conference on Migration and Mobility , held jointly by the Centre for Migration & Diaspora Studies and SOAS Journal of Postgraduate Research, at SOAS, University of London, on 23 March 2019 . This conference provides a platform for SOAS PhD students to showcase their projects, with an option to submit papers for publication to the SOAS Journal of Postgraduate Research, bringing together our interdisciplinary community of scholars who work on topics of mobility.

As we witness unprecedented rapidity in the movement of both people and ideas throughout the world, the word mobility becomes a contemporary paradigm of our time and a much-urgent one to be thoroughly investigated. Although people and ideas have always been on the move, in spite of any borders set by geo-political maps, today’s reasons and means behind people’s migration or the travelling of ideas from one country to another have become much more complex. In times like this, it has become paramount for social sciences and humanities alike to explore the nature and consequences of this movement.

Although the word mobility naturally invites a reflection on migration, this conference welcomes a broader range of papers investigating the movement of people and ideas as a challenge to any type of borders - be it geopolitical, social, artistic boundaries or technological. Here, mobility is understood as any of the historical, economical, artistic, political, linguistic, and environmental movements that constantly shape our society.

Given the multidisciplinarity of the term, papers welcomed include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Migration, transnationalism and diaspora
  • The representation of mobilities (art, culture, media, policy, etc.)
  • Histories of movement (ideas, people, materials)
  • Environment and mobilities
  • Gender fluidity
  • Methodological approaches (incl. translation and interpretation studies)
  • Borders (and resistance to borders)
  • Gendered, classed and racialised implications of migration regimes
  • Political economy of migration
  • Citizenship and immigration

If you are interested in presenting, please submit an abstract of approximately 300 words along with a brief bio to DoctoralConferenceMigration@gmail.com by FRIDAY 8 FEBRUARY 2019 . Applicants will be informed before the end of February 2019.

Panels will be organised around themes that emerge from the papers and will be assigned with a discussant to respond. The SOAS Journal of Postgraduate Research (SJPR) will publish a selection of the papers based on conference contributions. Please see the SJPR’s separate call for papers for more details on journal submissions. The deadline for full manuscript submissions to the SJPR is 30 MARCH 2019.
