1. Pipa Yin
Composed by: Xu Yi (2004)
Pipa, flute, clarinet, viola, cello, and percussion.
'Yin' has several meanings: introduction, interlude, sound, longing. Xu Yi explains that a forgotten instrument is longing to be reborn to a new life with a unique, colourful sound, and with a wish to find a new place, a new identity, in the contemporary world.
The piece fuses Chinese and western musical languages, adopting more traditional Chinese pipa and guqin styles with loose and free falling to contrast the more strict, rhythmically bound structures of music for western instruments. Xu Yi also explores multiphonic and microtonal techniques, tuning the pipa E-A-D-E-A.
