5: Liushui / Flowing Water

Qin solo

This piece, played by Cheng Yu on the seven-stringed zither, depicts different movements of flowing water from a gentle trickle to a powerful waterfall. Tablature notation for it first appeared in 1425 in the Shenqi Mipu (Spiritual Mysteries Score), a score compiled by Prince Zhu Quan, the 17th son of the founder of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
