The musicians are all associated with SOAS, but they are also all professionals:

  • Chartwell is our former teacher of mbira and MMus student; he played mbira for eight years with Thomas Mapfumo and the Blacks Unlimited;
  • Toraj Kiaras, one of the most renowned Persian classical singers, teaches performance classes at SOAS;
  • Cheng Yu was born in Beijing and studied in X'ian before coming to London, founding the London Chinese Music Ensemble, performing for WOMAD, recording for Real World and AMC, and doing her MMus and PhD at SOAS;
  • Andy Channing teaches both Balinese and Javanese gamelan at SOAS, and leads various gamelan groups in London;
  • Dusadee Swangviboonpong is a graduate of Chulalongkorn, and was a teacher at the Royal School in Bangkok before coming to London at the request of the HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirinidhorn; he completed his PhD at SOAS, which is now published, and is now an AHRC Postdoctoral Fellow at SOAS;
  • Nicolas Magriel has a long list of credits, including music for 'Jewel in the Crown'; his links with SOAS include his MMus and PhD and presently an AHRC Postdoctoral Fellowship.
