Track 9: Pailu Kerlu Pye

House protection rituals such as pailu pye can beelaborate and expensive, hence, although they should be given annually, many Tamu can only afford to hold them less frequently. In addition to protection from illness, this ritual can also be used to ensuree a good garvest.

Kerlu, chanted by pachyu shamans, is a creation text, and describes how the world and its living organisms were created. The sequence of creation is reminiscent of Darwins theory of evolution, running from water, through fish, amphibians, birds and mammals, to humans. The specific language used, and the rhythms on the drum, are integral and important parts in the telling of the myth.
