Shaped initially by geography and climate, indigenous Uzbek dances embody communal identity and provide an outlet for personal expression. Dance can also reflect social and political developments, especially the evolution of folk dance to professional art dance. These changes can give insight into Uzbek women’s changing status and the development of national identity. And while folk dance continues to be an integral part of Uzbek family and community events, the forces of urbanisation and globalisation have significantly impacted these traditions.
