Saeid Kordmafi, one of Iran’s most talented musicians on santour, is joined by Mehdi Emami (one of the most distinguished vocalists of his generation) and Fariborz Kiannejad on tombak to create a sense of time travel through the history of music of a vast civilization. The programme showcases the intricate characteristics of vocal and instrumental genres in classical Iranian music, preserved during time through aural traditions. Structured Improvisation is one of the key features of this music.
Adopting a cross cultural approach, the programme will in part display the interdependencies of the music heritage (generally referred to as maqam) of an entire region, crossing the borders and boundaries of Iran, the Arab world, Turkey, and Central Asia. Keeping in time with the present while remaining rooted in the past is a key to survival of classical Iranian music in the modern world.
The program is sponsored by the Iran Heritage Foundation, with additional support from Mrs Soudavar and the Nava Arts UK Centre.
