"Najma Akhtar's ‘Qareeb’ is the work of a musician who senses that, these days, she can remember the ancient, honor the everyday and sing to several continents at the same time." The New York Times

British born, vocalist, songwriter & actress Najma Akhtar created waves in World Music history  with her unique Indo-Jazz hybrid incorporating the traditional genre of the Ghazal (Urdu ballad).

Having been at the forefront of the British Asian scene for the last three decades, Najma has proved to be a successful and versatile artist, renowned not only for using modern jazz influences with Indian vocals and creating a beautiful fusion of eastern and western styles, but by pushing the boundaries repeatedly, introducing Blues, rock and other eclectic influences in her quest for undiscovered frontiers.

This iconic pioneer’s presence on the World music scene since the 1980’s inspired a whole new wave of South Asian artists to follow in her footsteps.

Najma has released eight critically acclaimed solo albums and has collaborated with numerous, outstanding peers ranging from Jah Wobble, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant, Andy Summers (The Police), Basement Jaxx, Jethro Tull, Philip Glass, Gary Lucas (Captain Beefheart). She’s also worked on several musical and creative theatre projects such as ‘Bollywood Dreams’ with Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tara Arts and the National Theatre. Najma is set to release her new album, ‘Five Rivers’, in 2020.
