Musical Instruments

Burmese Harp

The Department of Music at SOAS has an extensive collection of musical instruments of Asia and Africa. It is - uniquely – a working collection, used to support student performance courses within our academic programmes, our World Music Summer School and many informal student-led world music groups which meet in the newly renovated music studios.

Chinese Flutes

The collection is made up of instruments that have been bought by the department, long-term loans and donations.  The department is extremely grateful to:  Her Royal Highness Princes Maha Chakri Sirindhorn of Thailand and the Thai Music Circle, The Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia, London Okinawa Community ‘Sanshinkai’, David Rycroft, David Hughes, Beck Wells.
