How do we meet the challenges of using world music in schools? This intensive one-day course is tailored for students training to become music teachers and those who are considering a career in education, but will also appeal to more experienced teachers.
World Music meets the Wider Opportunities agenda, presenting opportunities for every child to work with instruments in a group environment. It is ideal for broadening composition activities, and for developing rhythmic and melodic skills as well as ensemble work among children of mixed abilities. We will work with a range of experienced teachers, musicians and academics, looking at challenges, resources, and pedagogies. Participants will also be offered three hands-on workshops featuring distinct world music traditions that are commonly used in schools at Key Stages 2 and 3 and as components of GCSE Music, using the large instrument resources at SOAS. Each workshop will introduce lesson plans supported by print and audio materials, and participants will each receive a pack of resources, including complementary SOASIS CDs.
A certificate of completion will be issued for all participants.
Discount available when booking this course as a ‘pack’ together with one other course in the programme.
