We are very proud to offer the unique opportunity of a one-off practical workshop in the art of mugham vocals with world-renowned master of mugham from Azerbaijan, Alim Qasimov. A multi-award winning artist, Qasimov has put the music of Azerbaijan on the map, and collaborated with many international luminaries including Yo-Yo Ma and Kronos Quartet. Well known as a master vocal improviser, he is also a generous and inspirational teacher. "To be a musician, there has to be a fire burning in you," he explains, "I’m convinced that if young people have this spark - call it inspiration, call it spiritual fire - they can perform any kind of music".

Open to singers and observers - all welcome. Courtesy of the Aga Khan Music Initiative.

Alim Qasimov (born August 14, 1957) is one of the foremost mugham singers in Azerbaijan. He was awarded the International Music Council-UNESCO Music Prize in 1999, one of the highest international accolades for music. His music is characterized by his vocal improvisation and represents a move away from the traditional style of mugham. Qasimov has recorded nine albums, three of which are mugham albums with his daughter, Fargana Qasimova. According to The New York Times, “Alim Qasimov is simply one of the greatest singers alive, with a searing spontaneity that conjures passion and devotion, contemplation and incantation.”
