A new lift shaft has been created in the Senate House North Block building, in an overhaul of the building’s facilities.
Using a boring machine, which enlarges a hole that has been drilled, an 8 X 16ft opening from the basement to the third floor of the building has been created.
The opening will eventually house two lifts that will service seminar rooms, a blended learning zone and a lecture theatre in the South West corner of the building. This is an area of the building that had not previously benefitted from stair free access.
The work is part of the wider plans to improve the accessibility of areas that people will use on a regular basis.
