A new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) has been devised by the School’s Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFIMS) and will commence from 25 January 2016.
The course, titled ‘Public Financial Management: How is Your Money Spent?’, aims to take a fresh look at public finance management in the wake of such major public finance issues as Greece’s handling of its public debt, and the city of Detroit’s filing for bankruptcy in 2013.
Enrolment for the course, which is completely free, opened on 19 October 2015.
Dr Alberto Asquer, Lecturer in Public Policy and Management, DeFIMS, said: “How can we be sure that public monies are being managed properly? How do we hold those in charge to account? This course has been designed to equip students with the tools and the knowledge to evaluate the management of financial resources in the public sector, wherever you are.”
The course has been developed in partnership with FutureLearn, an online company owned by The Open University, which specialises in delivering MOOCS. The School signed an academic partnership agreement with the company in March 2015.
