Students on the School of Arts’ ‘Curating Cultures’ MA module have curated five exhibitions in the Lady David Gallery at SOAS. Each exhibition was curated by a group of students taught by Dr Louise Tythacott.
Over nine weeks – from September to December 2015 – students used the History of Art and Archaeology Department’s teaching collections to explore a range of themes and issues about representing other cultures. They also produced group portfolios and gave presentations on their ideas as part of their coursework.
The exhibitions are titled ‘On the Steps of the Pagoda’; ‘Rituals of Everyday’; ‘Ceramic Finds in the Ghubayra Chambers: the Search for Iran’s Past’; ‘Mother: Earth Water Fire Air – Elements of Human Cultural Development’; and ‘The Inner and Outer World of Burmese Lacquerware’. They will remain in the Gallery until May.
The photographs below, showing the exhibitions being installed, were taken by Scarlett Crawford, a student on the module.
