Stefan Sperl and Ahmed Moustafa win Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The Cosmic Script

Professor Stefan Sperl, Head of SOAS University of London’s Department of the Languages and Cultures of Near and Middle East, and Dr Ahmed Moustafa, SOAS Research Associate, have been announced as winners of the Book of the Year Award of the Islamic Republic of Iran for their joint publication 'The Cosmic Script: Sacred Geometry and the Science of Arabic Penmanship' (London: Thames & Hudson, 2014).

The publication provides the first comprehensive exploration of the geometric rules underlying the Proportioned Script, an Arabic writing system which has dominated the art of Arabic and Islamic penmanship from the 10th century to the present day.

The nine other international award winners include scholars from Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Russia and the United States. The awards ceremony took place on 7 February 2016 in Tehran, in the presence of the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hassan Rouhani.
