Deborah Smith, Research Associate in the Korean Department at SOAS University of London, has been longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize for her translation of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian.

Ms Smith said: “It's wonderful to see this brilliant book get nominated for such a prestigious prize, particularly for one which gives author and translator equal recognition. The strong showing for titles from Asia proves that a lot of the most exciting contemporary writing is being produced in languages still sorely under-represented in English.”

Ms Smith has just completed a PhD in Contemporary Korean Literature at SOAS and is the UK's only published translator of contemporary Korean fiction. She was awarded the Arts Foundation Fellowship for Literary Translation earlier this year and has recently launched Tilted Axis Press, a not-for-profit company, publishing books that are stylistically and/or politically radical and are translated from Asian languages.

Han Kang is a celebrated author with a string of accolades including the Yi Sang Literary Prize, the Today's Young Artist Award, and the Korean Literature Novel Award.
