Two SOAS alumni shortlisted for the Man Booker International Prize 2016

SOAS alumna Ekin Oklap has been shortlisted for her translation of Orhan Pamuk’s ‘A Strangeness in my Mind’. Ms Oklap studied at SOAS University of London and Cambridge University. In 2012, she translated Orhan Pamuk's ‘The Innocence of Objects’ and currently works as a literary agent in London.

Also on the shortlist is Deborah Smith, Research Associate in the Korean Department at SOAS, for her translation of Han Kang’s The Vegetarian. Ms Smith has just completed a PhD in Contemporary Korean Literature at SOAS and is the UK's only published translator of contemporary Korean fiction.

Orhan Pamuk is the author of many celebrated books, including The White Castle, Black Book, Istanbul and Snow. In 2006 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Han Kang is a celebrated author with a string of accolades including the Yi Sang Literary Prize, the Today's Young Artist Award, and the Korean Literature Novel Award.
