SOAS University of London PhD graduate Dr James Eastwood is the joint winner of British International Studies Association's best doctoral thesis prize for 2016.
His thesis, ‘The ethics of Israeli militarism: soldiers‘ testimony and the formation of the Israeli soldier-subject’ explores how ethics have become crucial both in motivating soldiers to participate in military service in Israel and in constraining political activism against Israel's military engagements. The research is based on several months of fieldwork in Israel and Palestine.
The British International Studies Association (BISA) is a learned society which develops and promotes the study of International Studies, Global Politics and related subjects through teaching, research and the facilitation of contact between scholars.
Dr Eastwood's supervisor Professor Laleh Khalili said: “This is an immensely well-deserved award. James's research was sensitive, thoughtful, incredibly thought-provoking, and very important in making us think about the relationship between ethics and politics and militarism. James was a pleasure to work with and I learned so much from him in the course of his PhD. I am so glad his originality and brilliance is being recognised."
