SOAS University of London has been awarded the EcoCampus Platinum Status after passing a rigorous audit. This award is in is recognition of progress made in reducing the School’s environmental impact and carbon emissions and compliance with all relevant environmental legislation.
One of only 20 universities to receive this rating, SOAS, along with its Bloomsbury Colleges Environment Partners, has achieved certification to ISO 14001 International Standard for Environmental Management Systems (EMS). This certification recognises current progress being made and also acknowledges the commitment to continuous improvements to follow through on environmental improvement plans in the coming years.
Richard Poulson, Director of Estates and Facilities, said: “This is an achievement for SOAS and the Bloomsbury Colleges Environment Partners and recognises all our work behind the scenes to improve the environmental impact of the School.
“We have reduced our carbon emissions by 48% and increased recycling rates to 65%. Our construction projects are also committed to achieving Buildings Environmental Excellence and this has been seen most recently in the Senate House North Block development which has been certified a BREEAM Excellent building.
“We will keep engaging with our staff, students and the wider SOAS community to continue this work.”
EcoCampus is a national Environmental Management System (EMS) and award scheme for the higher education sector. The scheme allows universities to be recognised for addressing key issues of environmental sustainability, including carbon reduction.
