SOAS University of London

David Bostock

19 September 2016

We are deeply saddened to inform colleagues that SOAS student David Bostock died earlier in September. He was about to complete an MA in South East Asian Studies.

David was a member of the team from SOAS which took part in this year’s University Challenge competition. The episode featuring the SOAS team will be broadcast on BBC2 on Monday 19 September and will be dedicated by the programme makers to David’s memory.

David taught English in Indonesia in the early 1970s, and came to SOAS after retirement to renew his interest in the region.

Mulaika Hijjas, who teaches on the MA programme, said: “David was a stellar student, with an acute eye for detail and keen analytic ability. His dissertation on modern Indonesian literature was outstanding, drawing extensively on Indonesian-language sources to make an original contribution to the field. He was a joy to teach, and will be much missed in the department.”

Both the Department of South East Asia and the School will be writing to the family to express the Schools’ condolences.

The School also intends to award his MA posthumously at a future graduation ceremony.
