The sixth Indonesia Kontemporer (IKON), the Indonesian contemporary art and cultural festival, hosted by the SOAS Centre of South East Asian Studies (CSEAS) and organised by ArtiUK, drew in an estimated 1,400 people last week for its day long programme.
The festival is a creative event mixing performances, workshops, film screenings, puppet performances as well as food and handicrafts stalls. Artists and crafts people participating in this event hailed from many parts of the world outside Indonesia including Europe and the US.
As in previous years, IKON is made possible by the generous help of the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia to the United Kingdom. The event attracted international coverage on CNN Indonesia, Economic News, Harian Jateng, Sukabumi International and Netral News.
Ben Murtagh, Senior Lecturer in Indonesian and Malay commented 'This annual collaboration between SOAS, the Indonesian Embassy and the Indonesian community in London continues go from strength to strength. It was particularly pleasing to see so many students and alumni, London-cased Indonesians and their families and members of the broader public all coming together once again for what is now an established event in the UK Indonesian cultural calendar.'
