Dr Ruba Salih, Reader in Gender Studies at SOAS University of London gave a talk at TEDxCoventGardenWomen thgis term discussing the meaning of the term ‘refugee’ and the dangers of benevolence.
Dr Salih examined the kinds of human life which are constructed when we categorize people as ‘refugees’ and the meaning behind the phrase ‘refugees are human’. She also looked at the concept of shared humanity, reflecting on refugees in contemporary times and the role of compassion and benevolence.
TEDxCoventGardenWomen is an independently organised event in London devoted to ideas worth spreading which takes its lead from global TED. Topics at this year’s event included race and gender, business and technology, and entertainment and design.
