SOAS University of London celebrated the work of some of the most talented young journalists by sponsoring the Gaby Rado Award for Best New Journalist at the Amnesty Media Awards 2016.
The award was given to Syrian journalist Waad Al Kateab for her Channel 4 News report ‘Inside Aleppo: three brothers at al-Quds hospital’ which followed three brothers trying to have a normal day in Aleppo. Waad Al Kateab was unable to attend the awards as she was trapped in eastern Aleppo however she sent a message which was read out at the awards ceremony by Ben de Pear, Channel 4 News editor.
The Gaby Rado Award for Best New Journalist is awarded to a journalist who has made a significant contribution to the public’s awareness and understanding of human rights issues and began working as a journalist or photojournalist in the last five years. The award was established with the help of the family, friends and colleagues of the prominent and highly-respected journalist Gaby Rado, who tragically died in Iraq in 2003.
