20170720 - UG Prize Winners' Reception

The SOAS School of Law held its second annual Undergraduate Prize Winners’ Reception on 20 July 2017. Prize winners, their family and friends, and School of Law and other SOAS staff as well as alumni were present at the event hosted by Professor Carol Tan, the Head of the School of Law and Professor Mashood Baderin, the Undergraduate Programmes Convener. This year we were joined by two distinguished guests – Michel Massih, QC, Senior Fellow, SOAS School of Law and Dr Peter Slinn, a former Head of the SOAS School of Law. Dr Vivienne Bradwell, Mr Ian Edge and Dr Mayur Suresh presented some of the prizes.

20170720 - Group 1

This year’s prizes included prizes donated by alumni (Edmond Fung, LLB, 2011, Benjamin Ng, LLB, 2013, and Elliot Chong Aruldoss, LLB, 2014). Several other alumni also made donations to the Law Prizes Project. The School of Law is also grateful to other donors, namely the book publishers Oxford University Press, Hart Publishers and Wildy and Sons.

A special prize for the module Equity and Offshore was awarded this year to remember Mr Andrew Huxley, a former member of the SOAS School of Law who had designed and introduced the module. Ian Edge spoke warmly of his memories of Andrew Huxley as a colleague and of Andrew’s path-breaking scholarship on Burmese Law before presenting the Andrew Huxley Memorial Prize. The prize marks the very last year of the module in its current form.

20170720 - Group 2

The evening’s highlight was a speech by a graduating student, Aliyah Al-Yassin, winner of the prize for best final year performance.  Aliyah also won prizes in individual modules and had won module prizes and best performer in both her first and second year of her LLB. She thanked the law school academic and support staff for supporting students unstintingly over her three years at SOAS. She spoke movingly of how the completion of her law degree was also the completion of law studies that had to be abandoned by her mother because of civil war and starting a family. In being a prize winner, Aliyah was also repeating her mother’s own performance as best in her year all those years ago. Aliyah will join Slaughter and May as a trainee after taking the Legal Practice Course.

Two other multiple prize winners this year were Sophie Hunter and Annah Akhoun-Murat, both Senior Status LLB students. Professor Carol Tan congratulated all the prize winners. She said “Our students are some of the very best graduating with an LLB this year and it is not surprising that many of them have obtained training contracts at prestigious law firms.” She also took the opportunity to thank Mrs Juliet Ssentongo, the Law School’s student support officer, for her hard work throughout the year in supporting the School of Law’s students.
