The Jewish Music Institute (JMI) has renewed its support for the Joe Loss Lecturer in Jewish Music at SOAS University of London for the next five years.
This gift is a continuation of the partnership between SOAS and the JMI, which began in 1999, when the Joe Loss Lectureship was created. The post is named after renowned musician and bandleader Joe Loss LVO OBE.
The Jewish Music Institute is an independent Arts organisation, which is hosted at SOAS. Its aims are to bring Jewish musical culture – historical and modern – to the mainstream of British cultural, academic and social life. It also aims to make the study of Jewish music open to the widest possible participation through evening classes, workshops and summer schools, and through the Jewish Music Library, also located at SOAS.
The current Joe Loss Lecturer in Jewish Music is Dr Ilana Webster-Kogen. Dr Webster-Kogen teaches a variety of courses at SOAS including Klezmer Music: Roots and Revival, Jerusalem: Soundscapes of Nation and Conflict, Music and Culture, and musical performance, along with supervising PhD candidates and conducting research.
Dr Webster-Kogen said: "I am honoured to serve as the Joe Loss Lecturer in Jewish Music, and I'm delighted that the JMI continues to support my work at SOAS. The study of the cultures of ethnic minorities of Asia, Africa and the Middle East offers an important forum for our students to make sense of world events, and our department is grateful to have the platform and resources to reach students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels through Jewish Music."
