SOAS School of Law was pleased to welcome its PhD alumnus Dr Azmi Sharom, now Associate Professor, University of Malaya and leading figure in Human Rights law in the ASEAN region, to deliver the 2017 Inception Lecture. Titled 'Boiling the Frog: the Erosion of Human Rights in Malaysia', Azmi's lecture looked at a succession of key human rights cases through which the Malaysian judiciary have effected a rise in the temperature of the water.
The Inception Lecture is an annual public lecture delivered at the beginning of each academic session by a notable friend of SOAS School of Law, addressing a topical subject of general public interest which relates to the role of law in society in a broad sense. Previous speakers have been Rt Hon. David Lammy, MP, Geoffrey Robertson, QC, Baroness Hale And Michel Massih QC.
