The Director of the SOAS South Asia Institute, Professor Edward Simpson, visited Karachi last week. While in the city, he took part in a roundtable discussion on the Future of South Asian Studies as part of a conference on the more general theme of Questioning South Asia. The conference was hosted by Habib University and was very well attended by academics and civil society organisations. There was a wide-ranging discussion of development, literatures, the politics of representation, and the need to decolonise thinking about the region.
Professor Simpson also shared the stage on another panel with Dr Aasim Sajjad, they discussed the geo-political stresses that infrastructural diplomacy and development were putting on the shape of South Asia, CPEC in Pakistan and India’s Act/Look East Policies on the borders of South and South East Asia.
The event was covered by academiamag.
