SOAS Library receives donation of Buddhist texts

28 August 2018

SOAS University of London Library has received a donation of 33 books which make up the Tripitaka – the religious texts which recorded the words of the historical Buddha.

Chandra Rajakaruna, a former SOAS student who took several courses in the Postgraduate Diploma in Asian Art, donated the texts to express his gratitude to SOAS course director Dr Heather Elgood.

Also referred to as the ‘Pali Canon’ after the language it was written in during the 1st Century, the Tipitaka is the founding doctrine of Theravāda Buddhism still used today.

SOAS Library said: “This was extremely fortuitous as although SOAS Library holds a copy of the Canon text translated by the Pali Text Society, there are some volumes missing. SOAS Library is popular for Buddhist students and academics across London universities so to have all 33 volumes will be a very valuable resource.”

The books will be available in the South Asia reference section of the Library.
