SOAS Centre of Taiwan Studies awarded Teaching Grant
SOAS, University of London has signed a major agreement with Taiwan’s Ministry of Education to promote the School’s Taiwan Teaching programme.
The signing ceremony was held at the SOAS on Thursday September 20. The agreement was signed by the Director of the Education Division at the Taipei Representative Office, Dr Nicole Yen-Yi Lee and the SOAS Pro-Director (International) Professor Stephen Hopgood. The three year grant will allow SOAS to continue to offer its MA Taiwan Studies and extensive range of Taiwan related courses. SOAS opened its first Taiwan course back in 2000 and has gradually expanded these courses so that it now has the widest range of Taiwan courses of any European or American university.
After the signing ceremony the Director of the Centre of Taiwan Studies Dafydd Fell commented, “There are many Taiwan Studies programmes in the world but what sets SOAS apart is our focus on Taiwan Studies teaching. A key reason we have been able to develop this unique programme has been the support of Taiwan’s Ministry of Education. We now have both undergraduate and postgraduate Taiwan courses and areas covered include Taiwan’s politics, culture and society, languages and cinema. This is the fourth three year teaching grant that SOAS has been awarded since 2009 and will allow us to maintain our position as the world’s leading Taiwan Studies centre.”
