Law School Professor wins Director’s Teaching Prize

Professor Lynn Welchman has been awarded the Director’s Teaching Prize for Inspirational teaching. This category is awarded to individuals who:

  • Encourage students’ to both pursue independent critical thought and take responsibility for their own learning and research strategy
  • Promote motivating, inspiring and stimulating learning
  • Have an exceptional impact on the student learning experience
  • Stimulate students’ intellectual curiosity and interest in ways which will inspire their commitment to learning and research

Professor Welchman’s award was given for her work in The International Human Rights Clinic, which she established in 2007. The Clinic aims to encourage an engaged critical consciousness that reflects on and works within the trans-national intersection of law, rights and social justice. In response to her award Professor Welchman said:

“I am delighted to receive this inspirational teaching award for my work on the International Human Rights Clinic. The Clinic has enjoyed huge support and cooperation from SOAS colleagues and our institutional partners, as well as the unstinting enthusiasm and commitment of Clinic members, all of whom should feel they have a part of this award as recognition of our joint efforts.”

In the academic year 2019-20 the Clinic is expected to enter its 10th year, meaning that Professor Welch will have been inspiring, motivating, stimulating, and supporting students within the Clinic for over decade. Congratulations Lynn!
