SOAS Taiwan Alumni Association Forum—Diverse Concerns on Environment and Sustainability

An environmental forum, titled Diverse Concerns on Environment and Sustainability, was held by SOAS Taiwan Alumni Association on 16 June in Taipei. Four speakers shared their profession and work experience on environmental and sustainable issues from different dimensions. Three of them are SOAS Taiwanese alumni.    

The forum started from Professor Wen-Chen Shih’s speech exploring “Taiwan’s Participation and Performance in International Environmental Treaties”. Professor Shih was awarded her doctoral degree by SOAS School of Law, and is now a tenured professor specializing in international economic law and international environmental law in Department of International Business, National Chengchi University (NCCU), Taiwan.

Dr. Chung-Hsien Lee’s presentation observed the international trend toward regulating single-use plastic products from the perspective of political ecology. Dr. Lee also obtained his doctoral degree from SOAS School of Law, and now serves as a postdoctoral researcher in Institute of Law, Academia Sinica, Taiwan.

Ms. Tzu-Hsuan Chuang shared the experience of her “WOW! TAIWAN” art curation in New York last year, which exhibited Taiwan’s creativity on sustainable design and art. She got MA Sinology degree in SOAS and is now the Chief Secretary of Taiwan Creativity and Art Unlimited Association.

Mr. Jackie Chia-Hsiang Wang, the founder of a company “Renato Lab”, was invited to share his practical and technological experience on 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) of solid waste and how it can be re-designed from waste to art works. Mr. Wang got his master degree in Environmental Engineering in Feng-Chia University in Taiwan.

SOAS Taiwan Alumni Association has started to organize welcome and reunion events every year since 2014. It extends to invite outstanding SOASians sharing their experience on life, career and profession to potential applicants, new students and alumni from 2018. All Soasians living in Taiwan are more than welcome to join the group.
