SOAS’s 2019 honorary awardees were welcomed to the School this year at the annual reception hosted by the SOAS President Graça Machel.
The award-winning journalist Lindsey Hilsum, scholar, former banker and anti-corruption campaigner, His Highness Muhammad Sanusi II, CON (Sarkin Kano), editor, broadcaster and critic, Margaret Busby and the human rights lawyer Nursyahbani Katjasungkana were awarded at this year’s ceremonies.

Mrs Machel said: “It is an absolute honour to welcome so many of our close friends, valued stakeholders, and loyal supporters of SOAS to this annual event. I also warmly welcome and extend my heartfelt congratulations to our distinguished Honorary Graduates and Fellows as well.
“I am always struck by the remarkable atmosphere and the positive energy that exists here at SOAS. It gives us a sense of hope and a strong sense of purpose and connectivity in the world. The ambition, drive and passion among SOAS students and SOAS graduates never ceases to both amaze and inspire me.”
“All of us here in this room this evening are here because we believe in the School and its mission. We share common values and know this exceptional institution is nurtured and enhanced by our shared vision of excellence in education.”
The honoraries were each joined by their invited guests to mark the occasion. SOAS Director Baroness Valerie Amos also gave the opening remarks to the honoraries to welcome them to the SOAS community.
