SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance Organises First-ever Policy Dialogue on Sustainable Finance at the Bank of Japan in Tokyo

Policy discussion on aligning the financial system with sustainable development and
incorporating climate risk in financial decision-making at the Japanese central bank.

Ulrich Volz, Founding Director of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance and
Chair of the Japan Economy Network, led a policy dialogue on sustainable finance
challenges in Japan at the Bank of Japan, Japan’s central bank. The panel
discussion comprised Satoshi Ikeda, Chief Sustainable Finance Officer at the Japan
Financial Services Agency; Hideki Takada, Secretary General of the Green Finance
Network Japan and Counsellor at the Government of Japan; Yoshiya Ogawa,
Director of the Financial Markets Analysis Group at the Bank of Japan; and Yukari
Takamura, Professor at the University of Tokyo’s Institute for Future Initiatives. The
panel discussion was preceded by a presentation of a paper on ‘Sustainable Finance
in Japan’ by Kim Schumacher from the University of Oxford (co-authored by Hugues
Chenet from University College London and Ulrich Volz). The discussion took place
during the Fourth Annual Conference of the Japan Economy Network, which was
hosted by the Bank of Japan at its headquarters in Tokyo on 26-27 August 2019.
