The Economist magazine ran a story on findings by researchers of the SOAS Centre for Sustainable Finance. In its print edition of 17 August 2019, The Economist reported on the effects of climate change on public and corporate financing costs in climate vulnerable developing countries (“Costing the earth: Countries most exposed to climate change face higher costs of capital”). The Economist drew on findings of a research project commissioned by the United Nations that were published in a report on Climate Change and the Cost of Capital in Developing Countries in July 2019, as well as follow-up research conducted recently by a team of SOAS academics showing that firms in climate vulnerable countries, like their governments, have to pay a risk premium for their borrowing. The research findings of the UN report have been previously reported by the media, including coverage by the Financial Times, Reuters and Forbes.
