On Monday 16th December 2019, the Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS), SOAS, successfully hosted a one-day seminar on the topic of ‘Access to Justice: China-UK Dialogues on Criminal Legal Aid and Effective Defence’. This seminar brought together influential legal scholars, legislatures, legal practitioners, NGO representatives on criminal legal aid from both China and the U.K. Dr Yu Mou, who organised and chaired the seminar, believes that the impact of this event is significant and far-reaching. The delegates from China are leading figures of China’s criminal legal aid reform, involved at all stages of criminal legal aid legislation in China. Their engagement with the China-UK dialogue may positively influence Chinese policy-making on criminal legal aid. Their experiences drawing from the UK expert dialogues are likely to be reflected in the Criminal Legal Aid Bill of China which is currently in contemplation.
