The SOAS Japan Research Centre will deliver a series of briefing sessions on Japan for the British Olympic Association (BOA) in the months leading up to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The briefings will run between January and May 2020, ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics which is scheduled for 24 July to 9 August 2020. The sessions will cover Japanese history, society, media and culture and will be led by Helen Macnaughtan and Griseldis Kirsch. During her time as JRC Chair, Helen has conducted research on sport in Japan and established the JRC Sport Symposia Series. Griseldis is Senior Lecturer in Contemporary Japanese Culture and an expert in Japanese media studies. The British Olympic Association (BOA) is the National Olympic Committee (NOC) for Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Working with the NGBs (National Governing Body) of each Olympic sport, the BOA selects Team GB from the best sportsmen and women who will go on to compete at the Olympics. "It's a wonderful opportunity to use our Japan expertise to help BOA staff prepare for their engagement with Japan and Tokyo 2020 in what promises to be an exciting year in Japanese sporting history", says Helen Macnaughtan, JRC Chair.
