Bidding Farewell to London Middle East Institute (LMEI) at SOAS

31 July 2019

Dear all,

Just a reminder that today (31 July) was the last day for the LMEI support team in office. For me and my team this brings to an end a special chapter of a very proud, productive and lively period of engagement with a wide range of issues relating to Middle East studies at SOAS.

In due course, SOAS will be relaunching a new structure for the Institute and will make an announcement when the time comes.
This short notice serves as a reminder of my enormous debt of gratitude to the team: Louise, Vincenzo, Megan, Shahla and Aki. I'd like to thank them wholeheartedly on your behalf for their unwavering commitment and sterling service and wish them well for their futures.

It also remains for me to thank - on behalf of my team - all of you at SOAS and outside (academic colleagues and professional staff, our loyal audiences, students, Trustees, the Advisory Council ably chaired by Lady Barbara Judge, the magazine's Editorial Board and external partners) for their generous support and loyalty over the past ten years I had the privilege of being Director.

My term as Director ends in October when I will also retire from SOAS. My email will stay as before ( with my affiliation to SOAS continuing as an emeritus member of academic staff after October.

Please direct all other enquiries for admin matters relating to Middle East issues at SOAS to

With my warmest wishes,
Hassan Hakimian
Director, London Middle East Institute
