29 October 2021

Students taking the UG School of Arts module, Curating Global Arts , spent the day at the Horniman Museum in south London in week 3 (21st October 2021). The trip was set up by Louise Tythacott (module convenor), with Caspar Melville (Senior Lecturer in Global Creative and Cultural Industries) and Heidi Tan (module teaching fellow).

Students were welcomed by the education team who set up an introductory talk with Johanna Zetterstrom-Sharp , Senior Curator of Anthropology, about the World Gallery, followed by a question-and-answer session with the museum’s Director, Nick Merriman .

After a lunch break in the beautiful Horniman gardens, Adem Holness , Music Curator, gave a tour of the temporary exhibition, Dance Can’t Nice: Exploring London’s Black Music Spaces , and later in the afternoon two more Music Curators - Margaret Birley and Mimi Waitzman – treated students to a hands-on session in the Music Gallery, which had been specially closed off to the public for the SOAS group. A great day was had by all!
